When I have worked with students who are trying to read ebooks on a device like a Kindle I usually find that they haven't changed the font size, and when they do go larger they are much happier and state how much easier the content is to read. Although either is good, together is even better for many students (RWL - Reading While Listening). I've been reading audiobooks for years now. For those who are starting to read audiobooks, don't expect your comprehension/ability to be the same initially as with the printed page. It takes practice, just as printed reading takes. You will also get reading tired after so many minutes, especially with non-fiction, but as you keep listening you will get better and longer at a setting. The other thing that I noticed was I can now not only listen longer, you might also listen faster. I always tell my students that they need to talk slower when making audio recordings for classes, as the normal speaking voice is too fast for many. But since I started using audiobooks I've gradually increased my listening speed and now find the standard speed on many audiobooks (such as those from Audible) to be too slow and so I listen at 1.25x speed.

Many educators believe that reading a book is much more effective than listening to one. If you only ask if "they have read an ebook, audiobook, or print book then that is a 0 or 1 option. Yes, I read a book or No, I didn't. But consider the adjusted impact that might have if the reader had read 10 books or 100 books sometime over the past year. If that were so then a digital reader that read 100 books would have a greater impact on reading books that way over a paper reader who only read 1.

If you find that digital readers read more books than paper readers that would have a big impact on the print houses and overall sales of books. So one of the questions needs to be considered is how many books do these people read, if the average with 12, then someone reading 50 who was a digital reader has about 5 times the impact by comparison. Somethings are just too different. Take this study that also used ebooks with lots of bells and whistles. For reading comprehension we just need text, even adding pictures may change the effect. There is a similar issue when they use digital text that you can't go back and look at which makes it very different than a paper test. Then too there is the practice effect. I always wonder in these studies if they would change if they only used children that had extensive digital reading experience. Anytime you give people a new medium that they have to work with it changes the system (try driving with someone new to stick shifting - the driving is the same, that shift makes a huge difference). I'm sure that the data analysis is good, but it is also backward-looking situational.

<a data-auth="Verified" href="https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fr.smartbrief.com%2Fresp%2FnoaZCbuSmIsLxKbQfEangUfCtuRZ%3Fformat%3Dmultipart&data=04%7C01%7CTCAVANAU%40UNF.EDU%7Cd6ddb38f6d68498e852f08d8eef5cdc5%7Cdf29b2fa8929482f9dbb60ff4df224c4%7C1%7C0%7C637522086899463803%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=vjzuKdkKxHNzz9hxX1oIM5qqY6Po21vQ17eI2sHBq4s%3D&reserved=0" originalsrc="http://r.smartbrief.com/resp/noaZCbuSmIsLxKbQfEangUfCtuRZ?format=multipart" rel="noopener noreferrer" shash="WZ4D1yN1pkt4ihSR5CeSJ0TIH+vaKTEq8XzhZGQoM2RuDIEXWxuIFeCFpcIgv2UkaH+VOZ1hrnmF/vtID4RQ3ZkBx3TmsrlRHv5ohEjKm0PNBOSA6gjZYvQ5ZkeHpWrfZaABop3Vt53LiwVtuWor46hH9f7z0Q3NGKXLn6MPcuc=" style="border: 0px; color: #097abf; display: block; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank" title="Original URL: http://r.smartbrief.com/resp/noaZCbuSmIsLxKbQfEangUfCtuRZ?format=multipart. You need to read for comprehension, fluency, learning, association, and more. One strategy that helps new or struggling readers is Reading While Listening, that is where the reader silently reads while someone else reads aloud. The research available consistently demonstrates its favorable contribution to improving reading fluency. Since improving fluency is an instructional goal of elementary schools, we should always be on the lookout for tools that can assist in improving reading fluency. Children who are reluctant to read or who have low rates of fluency can benefit from hearing a text read aloud while they follow in a print version. When they are able to hear the words and phrases, they increase their speed and prosody (intonation) appropriate to the material being read, and are able to identify more words. In this case, though, I not thinking of reading silently. Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. To accurately understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently. When reading aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add intonation appropriately. But getting kids to read aloud can be an issue, especially when they have reading issues. One problem with this is that some students read badly and slowly and thus they set a poor example for the others or may become ridiculed by others. There are some great strategies though, I've always loved the Read to your Pet (or stuffed animal) one, and letting the reader pick the book is another good one. Here though is a free tool you can have them use by themselves. The tool I am considering is a teleprompter, which is something that adults who are on TV or give speeches use all the time. The website teleprompt.me provides a free service where you can paste in the text and the software will show it in a large format, not only that, the software will listen for when the words shown are spoken and advance only after it hears the words by darkening the words done.

.

For this to work, all you will need is your computer with an internet connection, a microphone (if the computer has one built in that is fine), and some text to read. You don't need all the specialized gear that is used for professional speeches. When you go to the site, your computer should ask if it is ok to use your computer's microphone.

Go to the site: https://teleprompt.me/ and you will find the tools you need at the top of the screen. Don't forget to give it an OK to use your microphone. There are options for four colors of text you can use with the black background. Try the yellow, after all the brain sees the difference between black and yellow as greater than between black and white - which can be helpful for many readers. You have four large font sizes you can use. There are three buttons, the Restart is the only one you should need. And there is a blank box that you can paste the text to be read into. You can get some good text from library sites like Project Gutenburg, or you could just type some of your own. If you want to reader to focus on just one sentence at a time you can add extra returns after each sentence.

Once the text has been added to the little box in the corner then it will appear on the screen and the reading aloud can begin. As the student says the words they get instant feedback on their progress, if they are too far off in their pronunciation then the system will not recognize that the word was spoken. And if they stop to ask you a question or go and get a drink the software will wait, holding their place. It isn't perfect but it could be a good tool to try for someone who needs some more practice reading aloud.

The software is actually designed for people to use as a teleprompter tool such as for when making a YouTube video. In school, this could be a great thing to start using for the morning announcements that students usually read off of a paper.

T. One issue that she said that she was having dealt with the students' textbooks. When they were sent home before the next semester they didn't have their textbooks for their new classes, and what with Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) there, all her students were online. The problem was that package delivery had been paused. Very different from here where Amazon broke sales records, and I saw their prime trucks everyday. To help her students she uploaded ebooks into their distance learning environment in order to help her students get their textbooks and keep up with the course instruction.

So if you are teaching ERT you might want to consider adding some public domain texts or ones that have been released under the Creative Commons license and get some books to your students.

I have three that you are welcome to use. I wrote a textbook titled Florida Science: The Science that makes Florida Different, this book is about science in Florida, it focuses on the concrete science that students can see here. When teaching science or any subject it’s important to remember to begin with the concrete and then move to the abstract. I have found that it has helped my students when I begin by teaching science concepts in a concrete manner and expand from there. I was a science teacher in Middle and High School for a long time and except for Hurricanes, Florida was hardly mentioned. So this book turns that around to just Flordia Stuff. This book is to support concrete teaching as it involves and applies facts and descriptions about tangible objects and actions that can be found in Florida, ones that they have likely seen, or applies to them and their surroundings.

The other two are kind of "textbooks", they are for students and teachers to use this text to assist students needing extra guidance with their purposeful reading strategies or just as an instructional or practice resource. The first book, The Secret Garden: Annotated with Reading Strategies for upper elementary and middle school readers contains an adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic "The Secret Garden" but has been enhanced with over 125 reading strategy experiences.

The second book, The Hound of the Baskervilles: Annotated with Reading Strategies, is for Middle and High School (and even College) students and contains an adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyles' classic book with over 100 reading strategy experiences embedded throughout the text. Both books guide readers with BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER reading strategies that students can practice with and help students Read with Purpose. Each chapter has multiple strategies embedded in the chapter to assist readers to read with purpose and become an active reader. Additional resources such as links to free audio versions and online tools are also provided along with suggestions on how to use your electronic book reader to improve your reading experience and access to information.

So go read a book, and enjoy it.

T. I'm a strong believer of having classroom collections (real or virtual). There are lots of great books out there that people just don't realize. Too many people think of science books and then immediately go to the science textbook or some kind of field book (although those are great to have in the classroom too. If you are building a classroom collection for your high or middle school science classroom make sure to include a variety of books, not just non-fiction, but also picture books (think coffee table books), and fiction (that would include science fiction too). So here are some non-fiction books that I think are great to have in a collection.

Some great books on science that are not textbooks:

The Science of Sci-Fi: From Warp Speed to Interstellar Travel (MacDonald)

Stuff Matters: Exploring the Marvelous Materials that Shape Our Man-made World (Miodownik)

Caffeine: How caffeine created the modern wold (Pollan)

Physics of Everyday Things: The Extraordinary Science Behind an Ordinary Day (Kakalios)

The Ghost Map: The story of London's most terrifying epidemic and how it changed science, cities, and the modern world (Johnson)

Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York (Blum)

The Poison Squad: One chemist's single-minded crusade for food safety at the turn of the twentieth century (Blum)

Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements (Kean)

Survival of the Sickest: A Medical Maverick Discovers Why We Need Disease (Moalem)

Future Magic and Indistinguishable from Magic (Robert L Forward)

Really interesting (and often funny) books are the works of Mary Roach:

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void

Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal

Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War (not about fighting, but about how the mil is working to save lives)

Some good books on Math:

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (Haddon) - yes this is fiction but has some great math in it.

The Mathematics of Love: Patterns, Proofs, and the search for the Ultimate Equation (Fry)

The Improbability Principle: Why coincidences, miracles, and rare events happen every day (Hand)

Science Fiction (for the most part) books for good science reading

Steve Alten

MEG oceanography, sharks

The Loch geology, oceanography

Isaac Asimov:

Asimov's Mysteries short stories, various science topics

Caves of Steel mystery, robotics

A Whiff of Death mystery, chemistry

Gregory Benford:

The Jupiter Project Jupiter

Against Infinity

Ben Bova

Prometheans genetics

Mars Mars conditions

Moonrise Moon conditions

Lois McMaster Bujold:

Falling Free gravity, genetics

Grant Callin:

Saturn Alia Saturn

Arthur C. Starting the week of April 30th, teens (and others) can download two titles that are paired each week for the next 14 weeks (till August). Each of the pairs will be available for free during their week. Readers can download the books using the Overdrive app, and once you have downloaded them they are yours for free. So if you know a teen introduce him or her to some new titles or format or allow yourself to try some young adult books. SYNC is available through Sora, the student reading app from OverDrive.
Available on Apple Apps and Google Play stores.

The books are available at https://www.audiobooksync.com/

I love to read (print, digital, and audio), and if you always have a book with you, then you can find some time to read. I'm also a strong believer in anchoring while reading. I can remember listening to Chopin A La Moog when I was a teen while reading Journey to the Center of the Earth and Ira Leven's This Perfect Day, and sill today when I hear music from that album I remember those books. I also think that that kind of anchoring can be done with where you are reading. Of course, not your favorite reading place at home where you normally read, but when you are traveling. I am lucky that I can travel for work, I am a teacher and Fulbright Specialist, and my work has taken me so many interesting places. When I was younger one of the problems I had while traveling was brining enough books to read, since depending on where you go you might not be able to get more books. This wasn't a problem while traveling in my home country, but you might not be surprised that it is a bit hard to find interesting science fiction in English when you are in China teaching at a university in Xi'an. That issue is one of the reasons I love my ebook reader. I can bring lots of books so I can have choices of what I want to read next (and an added bonus is changing the size of the text - depending on how I am traveling - shaking trains and busses need a larger text size). You might think, "you should look out the window, not read" and it is important to look out the window and see the sites. Of course, that would imply that there was a window to be able to see out of. Once when I was teaching in China I took a bus to and a train from the Great Wall of China, both ways I had to stand all the way there and back and couldn't really see out a window.
Below are some of the results of a study about large print. A problem with large print books (on paper) is that there are so few printed, many of the publishers still think of them for "older" readers. One solution for this though is if you or your school have ereaders to read the books you want, then use the settings or font functions of the ereader to change to a larger print. Please take the time to change from the default that you got with your ebook reader and try some different font, it can make an amazing difference with your reading.

Researchers have found a correlation between large print books and assessment results.
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #445d6b; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 29.124px; margin-bottom: 11.125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">
findings include:

<ul style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #445d6b; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 29.124px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 11.125px 35px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; vertical-align: baseline;">
Just finished reading an interesting study that was a meta-analysis of digital versus paper reading. The research done by Virginia Clinton (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/1467-9817.12269) concluded with:

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1d1e; font-family: "Open Sans", icomoon, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Reading from screens, such as tablets, smartphones and computers, has become ubiquitous for leisure, academic and work‐related reading. This review examined the literature on performance and two processes in reading text from screens and paper. There is legitimate concern that reading on paper may be better in terms of performance and efficiency. Future examination of key issues related to mind wandering, medium preference and contextual cues provided by medium will inform the practical implications of reading text from paper compared to screens.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1d1e; font-family: "Open Sans", icomoon, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1d1e; font-family: "Open Sans", icomoon, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">The study is well done and I wouldn't have any issues with her conclusions. Her study looked at 33 high-quality studies that tested students’ comprehension after they were randomly assigned to read on a screen or on paper. <span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1d1e; font-family: "Open Sans", icomoon, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">According to the study, the benefit for reading on paper was rather small, with 29 of the 33 laboratory studies found that readers learned more from text on paper. The study also identifies that the reading genre also makes a difference, the studies that had students read narrative fiction, found there was no benefit to paper over screens.

She also points out some of the issues of such studies. Such as how age is an important factor. Because adults have had more experience with reading (and for them, much of it would have been limited to paper). Today though, it has become more common for elementary school students to read from screens. So it is likely that readers who are children today may be more accustomed to reading from screens and readers who are adults likely learned how to read from paper. This makes me wonder how much of this is an experience effect. Also with that experience would be the devices. Other than her mentioning them being on screens and being studies after 2008, there was no differentiation of the analysis that I could find about the different kinds of screens, especially important for light-emitting versus the modern eink devices, like a Kindle. Additionally, she was using studies that didn't have participants with disabilities, including visual impairments, which is quite reasonable to avoid possible confounds related to disabilities.

I'm not surprised to find that there is some difference, or that it may be more for print - printed paper is a great technology with a long history. The study is a good one. But the issue that could develop are such a comparison of something that do one thing versus a variety of things. Consider, if you had to compare a rowboat and a powerboat, but you could only compare them by rowing. I've seen amazing changes in the reading experience by some of my students just by a minor increase in font size. Although, for those reading from lighted screens you have to worry also about the light effect and the distractions of other apps that might be one. Everything has advantages and disadvantages. We also need studies not to just combine all devices into one category, reading from a computer (screen just ahead), would be different from a tablet (down at an angle like a book), as could be the led screen versus the eink. More studies such as this one are needed.
They are all ways of conveying the content or story and all can be great ways to read new books or visit old favorites. AudioFile has just opened the SYNC: Audiobooks for Teens' 10th season. Starting this week teens (and others) can download two titles that are paired each week for the next 14 weeks (till August 1). Each of the pairs will be available for free during their week. Readers can download the books using the Overdrive app, and once you have downloaded them they are yours for free. So if you know a teen introduce him or her to some new titles or format or allow yourself to try some young adult books. There are also some other greats including Shakespeare's Othello and one of my science favorites Mary Roach's Gulp.
